Preview CG2021 October 15: Ward vs Roa
October 14, 2021
Miami, FL– Colombia’s Dumar Roa (15-9) says he has learned from his mistakes, but young undefeated Texas fighter Landry Ward (4-0) plans on coming in like a fright train in this week’s CG2021 October 15 main event, plus Diana Mendoza (1-0) rolls the red carpet to Stephanie Iruzo (0-2-1), who is in search of her first win.
CG2021 October 15 airs live staring at 10:30 p.m. ET on Paramount + (English) and at midnight on Univision (Spanish).
Roa vs Ward
Roa says he underestimated his last opponent Cristian “Puas” Perez, when he lost by submission. The Colombian can anticipate the same type of young fighter in Ward to push the pace right for the start. Roa said he didn’t think Perez’s stand up would be as powerful as they were, but in Ward, well, he packs a punch and has strong wrestling skills.
For the Colombian to earn a victory inside la jaula this year, he has lost twice this year, he needs to close the distance. He can’t allow Ward to take control of the fight. If so, we can potentially see an early stoppage. Ward is moving down weight classes, so he is a strong feather weight.
As for the Texan, look for the crafty and accurate powerful strikes. Ward last defeated his opponent Alfrego Ruelas by split decision and he is planning not to leave the decision in the hands of the judges this time around.
Mendoza vs Iruzo
Iruzo is in search for her first victory. Surely, she is walking inside la jaula with butterflies since it is the first time stepping inside such a large stage, however, she counts on her cornerman David Solorzano. Iruzo has a strong grappling game, which will be useful against Mendoza.
In her victorious debut against Sara Cova, where she won by split decision, Mendoza was the aggressor. Although winless, Mendoza will be challenged as unlike her first opponent, Iruzo will search for takedowns where she feels comfortable.
In an effort to put the breaks on Iruzo, Mendoza needs to strike and give distance. She can’t allow Iruzo they get inside the pocket where she can easily reach for the legs and later transition the fight to the ground.
Luis Gomez (8-3) vs Michael Garcia (4-2)
As athletic as he can be, Garcia, who competed in the junior Olympics in weightlifting and boxing, is making his debut against a talented Cuban Luis Gomez, who recently came up short in a four-man tournament in April.
Garcia is coming off a high winning a regional championship. Gomez, who also won a regional championship in his career, needs to be crisp with his punches. He needs to work himself in the pocket and potentially land an Ippon Seoi Nage judo throw. He has knocked out opponents in the past with it. He has trained this move tons of times and has earned him a victory. But if he trades with Garcia, we can be in for a treat as it can be a tit-for-tat type of a fight.
Garcia needs to go to the ground. Gomez has had difficulties with his ground game and has lost many fights due to the lack of effectiveness on the ground. He said he has fixed his errors, but Garcia should capitalize on it if he wants to go home with a win. If not, the Cuban will add another victory to his record.
