In the main event announced today, Andre Barquero (7-2) will square off with Victor “Periquito” Madrigal (8-3) for the Combate Americas interim world bantamweight (135 pounds) championship.
Barquero of San Pedro, Costa Rica is a prolific, 24-year-old submission ace who has won seven of his last eight starts, with six of the victories coming by way of (T)KO or submission.
The matchup will mark Barquero’s second appearance in San Antonio, where he notched his last win, a third round (4:38) submission (rear-naked choke) of contender Eduardo “El Pube” Alvarado in Combate Americas live televised action last November 8.
The 29-year-old Madrigal of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico has produced several thrilling highlights in La Jaula, the Combate Americas competition cage, beginning with his third round (2:14) submission (rear-naked choke) of Christian “El Taylon” Quiñonez that Madrigal pulled off after an epic, see-saw battle in Guadalajara on October 26, 2018.
On the heels of this career-best victory, Madrigal returned to Combate Americas action last March 8 and scored a thunderous, second round (3:50) TKO (punches) on Spain’s Zebenzui Ruiz, earning a victory for Mexico on the ‘Mexico vs. Spain’ card.
In a featured lightweight (155 pounds) matchup announced today, Angel “Tito” Cruz (6-4) will face off with Raymond Guzman (0-0).
The 32-year-old Cruz is coming off a stunning, first round (:49) submission (keylock) of Ariel Juarez at Combate Americas last November 1.
Fighting out of Austin, Texas, Guzman is a 30-year-old professional boxer with a 3-3 record in the squared circle. He will make his professional MMA debut after 18 months of crossover training.
The Combate Americas live television event will also feature the promotional debut of women’s upstart and San Antonio-based prospect, Rainn “The Bully” Guerrero (1-0), who will face an opponent to be determined, at a catchweight of 130 pounds.
In a second women’s bout, amateur MMA and boxing star Marisa “El Díne” Chavez (0-0) of Albuquerque, N.M. will make her much-anticipated professional debut against Krista Camarillo (0-0) of Altus, Okla.
Elsewhere on the card, a welterweight (170 pounds) contest will see Raymond “The Executioner” Banda (7-3) of Harlingen, Texas take on David Herrera (4-4-1) of San Antonio.
Eduardo “El Pube” Alvarado (8-6) of Tijuana, B.C., Mexico will battle Justin “The Therapist” Governale (7-7) of San Antonio at bantamweight.
San Antonio rivals Michael Martinez (1-1) and Roy Sarabia (1-2) will face off at featherweight (145 pounds).
Jose Holguin (0-0) of San Antonio will make his professional debut against Ricardo Maynez (0-1) of El Paso, Texas at bantamweight.
A flyweight (125 pounds) affair will pit David Miramontes (4-5) of San Antonio against Omar Perales (1-2) of New Braunfels, Texas.
