Joey Ruquet: The Hunt For The Bantamweight Championship
August 12, 2019
Joey “El Cazador” Ruquet has the opportunity to make history in Combate Americas, with a rematch against Gustavo Lopez.
On August 23rd, Combate Americas will celebrate an unprecedented event. Two belts will be in disputed on the same night: Andres “The Bullet” Quintana (18-2) faces Argentine Bruno “Aquiles” Cannetti (8-6) for the inaugural featherweight championship, and the 135-pound championship clash between defending champion Gustavo Lopez (10-4) and Puerto Rican American Joey “El Cazador” Ruquet (7-2).
Joey Ruquet joined the promotion in 2015. Coincidentally his first opponent inside “La Jaula”, the circular cage of Combate Americas, was none other than Gustavo Lopez.
In the aforementioned clash, although Ruquet showed a diverse set of skills as a fighter, he was defeated by submission (Arm Triangle) at 4:06 in the second round. From that moment on, Ruquet continued to compete in Combate Americas with one mission: to become champion.
Since that loss to Lopez, Ruquet has won all his bantamweight fights, including dominating performances against Jose Ceja, whom he defeated by submission (Rear Naked Choke) in the second round, and against Vinney Pantelone by unanimous decision.
His most recent match was against Alan “Beche” Cantu, a powerful Mexican fighter, who’s last fight had him knocking out his opponent Eduardo “El Pube” Alvarado, in just 26 seconds of the first round.
Once again, Ruquet showed what he was made of and defeated his opponent by unanimous decision, thus marching on with three straight wins in the division and demanding a chance for the title.
Four years later, Ruquet will once again face Gustavo Lopez, but this time, with more experience and as a better fighter.
Combate Americas will arrive for the first time in Lake Tahoe on August 23, live on U.S. television in Spanish, on both Univision (12 a.m. ET/PT) and TUDN (12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT), and live in the U.S. and Canada in English on DAZN (9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT).
